Did you know that, as a self-employed person in Luxembourg, you can voluntarily join the Employers' mutual insurance association to cover any financial burdens resulting from loss of income in the event of illness?

In concrete terms

Voluntary membership of the Employers‘ mutual insurance association guarantees self-employed workers reimbursement by the Employers’ mutual insurance association for the first 77 days of incapacity for work.

In the event of illness or accident at work, compensation is 80% of the contribution base (income) applied at the time of the incapacity for work.

During the same period, the Mutualité also covers 100% of the cost of:

  • leave for family reasons;
  • accompanying leave;
  • quarantine or isolation ordered by the Director of Health or his delegate.

Any period of incapacity for work must be supported by a medical certificate submitted to the CNS.

Compensation is paid monthly via the CCSS. However, the amount in question will not be reimbursed to the self-employed person but will be credited to the CCSS account statement to be offset against the contributions due for the various risks.

Contribution rates

Affiliates are divided into 4 contribution classes according to their financial absenteeism recorded during an observation period determined by the MDE.

All new members pay into class 2.

The contribution classes and the rate of financial absenteeism are defined in the Mutualité des employeurs' articles of association. They are set before 1 December of the current year for the coming financial year.

Membership deadlines

If the self-employed person has just started a new activity (new affiliation), the application may be submitted to the CCSS no later than three months after the start of affiliation.

If the self-employed person is already affiliated to the CCSS, the application must be submitted at the end of year N for membership to take effect from 1 January N+1. So you need to ask yourself the question now...

How to join?

The self-employed person must complete and sign the 'Application for voluntary entry of non-employees to the employers' mutual insurance' form available on the CCSS website.

This form should be sent to the CCSS either by e-mail ccss@secu.lu or by post to CCSS L-2975 Luxembourg.
